During the 2003 NASCAR season, #12 Ryan Newman has had his competition completely frustrated. His cars
have been getting superior gas mileage. He has used fuel so much more
efficiently that it has allowed him to win several races. Many teams even
accused him of cheating. According to Team Ford Racing, the Penske team
that Ryan drives for just outsmarted everyone else. The secret is not
magical at all. It is just smart racing. .
- NASCAR allows carburetors that flow 830 cubic feet per minute maximum.
- Newman's team experimented and found that they could reduce the size of
the carburetor to a 750 Cubic feet per minute carburetor and only lose 2 horse
power.
- The smaller carburetor increased fuel efficiency by 1/2 mile per gallon.
that equals an 11 mile advantage per fuel run.
- At tracks such as Lowe's Motor Speedway Newman is able to circle 7 more
laps befor refueling compared to any of his competition.
- Unfortunately somehow the secret got out, and so will end his advantage
that seemed like "magic".
